This 60" tall carved marble statue of Hercules dates to the 18th century. It went from the house of a Chicago client to Summers Place Auctions (an associate of Sotheby's) in England and sold in late 2008 for 35,000 GBP (more than $50,000 US). Estimates for sale within the United States ranged from a few thousand to fifteen thousand dollars. It cost several thousand dollars to ship this statue to England but, despite this cost, the net realized upon sale was significantly higher than any estimates upon sale within the United States. This is a good example of the importance of market knowledge and placement and the value of working with knowledgeable brokers when selling your property.
